MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION TECHNIQUES: Using Photoshop’s 3D Shape Layer to Create Alveoli

I’m all for speeding up my process when it comes to creating a visualization.

Hot keys? Hell yeah. Adjustment layers? Oh yes. Masking tools? Yeeeeow-yus.

So when it came to drawing a capillary bed on a cluster of alveolar sacs, I wanted to see if there was a quicker way to go about it.

Photoshop’s 3D shape layer tool seemed pretty interesting and after 2 hours of playing around with it I was able to produce this:

I would say that’s not bad, considering that it would take me ½ a day to 1 day to produce something similar drawing the capillary bed by hand.
